With cutting-edge technology, Dr. Leif Nordberg can safely eliminate acne, leaving you feeling refreshed and more confident about your appearance. We use Sciton BBL™ laser acne treatment at our Stamford, CT, practice to treat current acne breakouts as well as acne scarring. The laser works by targeting the glands that are responsible for causing acne and also stimulates collagen, which reduces the appearance of other imperfections. The result is smoother, rejuvenated skin, with a complete or significant reduction in acne and scarring.
About Laser Acne Treatment
During treatment, the Sciton BBL™ (broadband light) laser emits pulses of light that penetrate the skin. These pulses target the overactive sebaceous glands that cause acne. Each laser treatment session lasts about a half hour and most patients require one session per week or every other week, for about eight weeks to achieve their desired results.
The laser targets the glands that are responsible for causing breakouts, and also stimulates collagen, which reduces the appearance of other imperfections.
During your treatment session, a cooling gel is applied to the skin and the light pulses are precisely set to a specific temperature. These measures help minimize any discomfort. You will experience some warmth and mild stinging during treatment, and you can expect to see some some redness and swelling for one to two days afterwards. You can apply makeup immediately after treatment to conceal any redness.
The results of laser acne treatments are long-lasting, especially when combined with a skin care regimen, but not permanent. After the acne and scars are initially eliminated, most patients will require maintenance treatments every six months or so. This helps to prevent future breakouts and additional scarring.
Candidates for Laser Acne Treatment
Laser acne treatment is appropriate for both teens and adults affected by the skin condition. Our laser treatment is safe and non-invasive and involves almost no downtime, making it a great option for most patients. Patients taking certain medications may not be good candidates as well as those with naturally dark or tanned skin, as it could cause hyperpigmentation. In some instances, we may advise patients to stop tanning for a month or more to qualify for treatment.
Risks and Benefits of Laser Treatment
As a non-invasive treatment, there are very few risks involved. You may feel and look like you have a mild sunburn for up to 24 hours following treatment. You may also experience some swelling for one to two days after each session. Some patients experience an acne flare-up after the first one or two sessions, but these will subside with each subsequent session. There is a risk of a blister forming, but this is easily treated with antibiotic ointment. The risk of permanent changes in skin pigmentation is rare, but possible.
Sciton BBL™ laser therapy is effective in eliminating current acne, preventing future breakouts, and reducing scarring. There is minimal downtime, so you can get back to school or work right away. You should begin to notice improvements in your skin within just a few treatments. With a proper skin care routine, you can enjoy the long-lasting results of smooth, clear skin.
