Function Like New Again
Hand surgery seeks to restore normal hand function by repair or reconstruction of injury or chronic disease. Plastic Surgeons have traditionally been involved in hand surgery due to the delicate nature of the structures that pass through the hand. Unfortunately, hand surgery is often performed due to traumatic injuries. Lacerations to tendons, arteries, and nerves need to be carefully repaired, often with the aid of microsurgery. Fractures of bones of the hand and fingers also need meticulous repair. An injury to the soft tissues of the hand such as in burns, cuts, and deep wounds may also require tissue to be transferred from one place on the body to another.
Non-traumatic or chronic diseases of the hand are also treated by a hand surgeon. This includes infections, cysts, tumors, tendon diseases (tendonitis), nerve entrapment (carpal tunnel syndrome), and the like. As you expect, the hand is extremely important to how we sample and interact with our environment and, hence, must be cared for by the appropriate specialist.
