A modern nasalplasty (rhinoplasty) involves making changes in the bony and cartilaginous framework of the nose through incisions made inside the nose, thereby changing its shape. The skin is merely allowed to "re-drape" over this new framework. The experienced board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeon should be able to "customize" his intended result to each patient's needs, and not to create a stylized appendage in the same mold for everyone. Be assured that if you have me perform this operation on you, your nose will look like it belongs on your face, and will be totally natural in appearance.
Upon completion of the procedure, a small piece of soft paper is placed in each nostril to hold the incisions in place, as there are essentially no stitches used inside the nose. This is frequently referred to as "packing". This paper is removed the next day. In addition, a lightweight plastic splint is molded to your new nasal profile upon completion of the procedure to stabilize the healing of the nasal bones and to allow adherence of the overlying skin to the new framework. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, whichever is felt to be more desirable for you, and is done an a day surgery basis, with no need for an overnight stay. The operation can be performed in the hospital or in my private, Fully Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facility, depending on particular circumstances.
